Privacy policy
Effective 29 October 2026
This policy covers mapsbyfunk.com and the Video Atlas at mapsbyfunk.com/atlas/ (together, "the site"), run by Maps by Funk. It explains what the site collects, where it is kept and who else is involved.
We use YouTube API Services
The site uses YouTube API Services to show videos, titles, thumbnails, view counts and channel details. By using the site you agree to the YouTube Terms of Service. Google's handling of data is described in the Google Privacy Policy.
What we collect
- No accounts yet. The site has no sign-in today. We don't ask for your name or email, and we don't access your YouTube or Google account.
- Things you save in the Atlas. Trips, saved videos and places, and any edits made in the creator tools are stored in your own browser's local storage. They never leave your device, and we can't see them. Clearing your browser's site data deletes them.
- Files you import. A spreadsheet imported into the Atlas is read in your browser and stored the same way, on your device only.
- Server logs. The site is hosted on Cloudflare, which keeps standard request logs (such as IP address, browser type and the page requested) to run and protect the service. We don't use these logs to identify you.
We don't run analytics or advertising trackers, and we don't sell or share personal information.
YouTube data we store
To build the Atlas, we fetch public information about the featured channels and their videos through the YouTube Data API: titles, descriptions, publish dates, durations, view and subscriber counts, and channel names and avatars. We refresh this daily and delete anything YouTube no longer returns, such as a video that was removed or made private. Video locations on the map are worked out by Maps by Funk from titles and descriptions; they don't come from YouTube.
Third-party content and cookies
The site itself sets no cookies. Pages load content from these services, which may receive your IP address and set their own cookies under their own policies:
- YouTube plays embedded videos (through youtube-nocookie.com) and serves thumbnails and channel images. YouTube may set cookies once you play a video.
- Google Fonts serves the site's typefaces.
- jsDelivr serves the map library.
- Map tiles and place search come from CARTO, Esri, OpenMapTiles, OpenStreetMap's Nominatim and Overpass services. When you search for a place, your search text is sent to those services.
- Booking links. Some places link to booking sites such as Booking.com and Klook. Those sites apply their own policies once you click through.
Changes
When we add sign-in, we'll update this policy first to explain what's stored and how to delete it. If you connect a Google account in the future, you'll be able to revoke the site's access at any time from Google's security settings page.
